Hello all,

I’m pleased to announce the release of the vWorkspace Connector for Mac OS X version 7.5. A lot of work has gone into making this a more stable and better performing connector for the Macintosh platform. The most significant feature updates are the removal of the connector's dependency on X11 and the addition of EOP Xtream. The removal of X11 has been an issue for a number of customers, and we have therefore rebuilt the connector to leverage native Mac OS X APIs rather than use X11.

In addition to the new features, we have made quality improvements which are described in the release notes in more detail. Documentation, release notes and the Connector's installer can be found at www.quest.com/vworkspace by clicking the Try link. The documentation can also be found at support.quest.com.

This release includes the following new features:

  • EOP Xtream - Improves the end user's virtual workspace experience when connected over a latent network.
  • X11 has been removed as a dependency -The Connector for Mac now uses libraries native to Mac OS X thereby increasing performance and reducing user resistance.
  • Support for Universal Principal Names- Users can now logon to a vWorkspace farm using their Active Directory User Principal Name (UPN).
  • Support for Published Content- The paths to content such as spreadsheets, documents and web sites can be published from a vWorkspace farm and executed locally by the Connector for Mac.

It is recommended that anyone trying this new version first read the release notes.

Thanks,

Kelly Craig

vWorkspace 7.5 - Feature Spotlight Series

Welcome to another vWorkspace Feature Spotlight blog post. We are very excited about the new features and enhancements included in the latest version of our product. Today we are going to focus on EOP Audio and the benefits it brings to your organization.

What is EOP Audio?

EOP Audio provides high quality bi-directional audio experience and allows to play high quality audio contents and redirection of microphones or headsets to a remote session. The Audio codec and quality can easily be adjusted to different levels in order to meet your organization needs. With the upgraded EOP Audio feature in vWorkspace 7.5 we have provided support for Microsoft Lync, Microsoft Office Communicator and other VoIP applications in both WAN and LAN network scenarios.

The list below provides examples of how granular EOP Audio is and how you can configure it to meet your needs:

User RequirementsSuggested Codec
Suggested Quality
Users need to play CD music with the highest possible quality over a remote session in LANWIN : MS-PCM44,100 kHz; 16 bit; Stereo
Users need to make phone calls by using a Softphone application over a remote session in WANSP : Speex8 kHz; 16 bit; Mono
Users need to play songs with good quality over a remote session in WANWIN : MPEG Layer 356 kBit/s; 24kHz, Stereo

As you can see you can pick and match your individual user needs and what it is more important these settings can be specified on a per user or virtual machine basis:

enhancedaudio2.PNGenhancedaudio3.PNG

In addition to the quality and codec support it is also important to note that EOP Audio supports USB or analog headsets, earphones and microphones and makes them available to the user virtual machine or VoIP applications in a remote session.

We will now have a closer look on how Quest Audio integrates with various infrastructure components like EOP Xtream, SSL encryption, VDI and RDSH Sessions and of course Microsoft Lync Client and Server components.

Good morning,

I am pleased to announce that Quest is releasing vWorkspace ThinShell version 2.5. ThinShell 2.0 was released last year as a shell replacement for Windows PCs and thin clients. Shell replacement allows organizations to transform their existing PCs into thin-behaving clients or to simplify a thin client deployment. ThinShell accomplishes this by replacing the windows shell with its own much slimmer shell interface. Users power on their access device, are prompted for a user name and password and are then presented with their virtual workspace. Easy as pie. This prevents confusing the users and simplifies a virtual desktop or terminal server deployment. ThinShell can be configured to act as a connector or to leverage other vWorkspace connectors such as the Windows Connector or the Connector for Web Access.

With this release we are giving ThinShell a face lift and providing better platform support, among other advancements. Here's a preview:

TSInterface2.PNG

In addition to the new look we have added some other features. The full list follows:

  • New User Interface- We have added a sleek, new interface to ThinShell making it easier to use and more configurable. In addition to the new look, the new interface allows administrators to control which options the end users can see and use.
  • Support for Windows 7 and WES -ThinShell has added support for Windows 7 and Windows Embedded Standard 7.
  • Password Manager support- ThinShell users can now change their domain password using the ThinShell interface.
  • Command Line Configuration- The location of the ThinShell Settings XML file can now be set at runtime using command line switches.
  • Legal Notice- ThinShell now can prompt the end user with a notification before a connection is made to the virtual workspace.

Before implementing ThinShell 2.5, we recommend that you first read the release notes to understand any outstanding issues.

Enjoy!

By popular demand, I've created a way to centrally manage the Flash Blacklist.

Overview

Quest Flash Redirection is great but occasionally a Flash site is written in a way that does not work well with FMMR.

Rather than disable flash entirely, you can add the troublesome site to a Blacklist.

This involves:

1. Open Regedit on the TS/VDI

2. The list of web sites which are "Black listed" and will not be redirected are stored in

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Provision Networks\Flash Redirection\bl (on x86 systems)

or

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Provision Networks\Flash Redirection\bl (on x64 systems).

3. Add the new site to this Multi-string value and FMMR will not be activated for that site.

Effort

This is fine if you're managing a small environment but gets tiresome when you have a lot of machines to look after.

Future

So, we've logged this an Enhancement Request

Today

The good news is, 2008R2 and Windows 7 can handle ADMX files that set multistring values!

Attached to this blog is a Zip file containing example ADMX and ADML files.

Follow this article on how to deploy custom ADMX files in your environment. Click here

Once the admx file has been added correctly, The setting will appear in your group policy management tool under Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Quest

admx.JPG

Enable the  setting and add the sites that you wish to block.

WARNING: You need to add all the previous blocked sites to this list. Copy these from the registry of an existing TS. Alternatively this is the default 7.5 list.

Good day,

I am excited to announce the release of the vWorkspace Connector for iPad version 1.2. The Connector for iPad is a simple application that allows people within your organization to use an iPad to connect to Windows desktops and applications published in a vWorkspace farm.  And with the continued shift toward the consumerization of IT and BYOD initiatives, we feel the timing for this new release couldn’t be better.  After all, as you’ve probably noticed, the terms BYOD and iPad are often joined at the hip due to the worldwide popularity of this market generating device. By leveraging the native iOS libraries we have decreased the size and increased the speed of the Connector for iPad. We have also greatly improved the performance and stability of the product. As with all iPad applications this Connector can be obtained from the AppStore. Documentation and release notes can be obtained from support.quest.com and are not included with the installer. For more details on the specific issues we’ve addressed in this latest release, please see the release notes.

The FAQ below answers some common questions:

We are running a poll on preferred Linux distributions for our Linux Connector. Please take some time to weigh in.

We have a good idea what platforms to support, but would really like to get the communities input before we forge ahead.

Good day all,

I'm happy to announce the release of version 3.9.4 of vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite. The vWorkspace - MokaFive Suite enables customers to securely, centrally and affordably deliver Windows desktops and applications both online and offline using "local VDI" technology from MokaFive. The vWorkspace - MokaFive Suite completes the spectrum of desktop virtualization technologies available in the Quest vWorkspace product family, and extends desktop virtualization to a wider range of users, including those who are less frequently connected and/or demand local computing power.

We have the following new features in this release:

·         Fusion 4 and Player 4 – vWorkspace MokaFive Suite now supports the latest major release from VMware.

·         Improved end user experience –A new console and player tour have been added to simplify the user experience.

·         Add LivePCs – LivePCs can now be added directly through the Player UI.

·         Offline Files Integration – Data backup and restore can now be performed using Windows Offline Files.

·         Automatic cleanup of uploaded LivePCs – LivePC Optimizer now runs automatically.

·         New domain join functionality – Administrators can create domain join packets with a pre-defined list of computer names.

·         Improved RAM management - When running multiple LivePCs on a host, the Player will now validate that the host has enough system resources (memory) to run additional LivePCs.

Don’t forget that the vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite:

  • Can be used anywhere, anytime. Provides access to your Windows desktop environment online or offline, on any decent Mac or PC. Plus, you can take it with you on a USB stick or smartphone.
  • No extensive server infrastructure required. A minimal server requirement reduces initial capital costs as well as ongoing expenses.
  • Can be personalized for individual users. Maintaining user data, applications and settings even as the OS and core enterprise applications are centrally updated and patched.

We also have plenty of resources available to you so that you can learn more about the vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite, and how it fits into the Quest Desktop Virtualization Strategy:

The vWorkspace - MokaFiveSuite v3.9.4 is now available for download here from the quest.com trial download area on our website. When you download the product you will automatically be emailed details of how to obtain the trial key.

Further information on the supported features and the documentation explaining how to deploy the vWorkspace – MokaFive Suite can be found in the download package.

Enjoy!
